Michael Jesse Kuo, Baritone
Taiwanese-American baritone Michael Jesse Kuo is a versatile and dynamic artist making a significant impact on operatic and concert stages across Northern California. Looking ahead, Kuo joins the resident company of Opera San José as an Artist-in-Residence for the 2026/2027 Season, where he will step into the next This prestigious appointment marks an exciting new chapter in his career he joins a cohort of artists for a busy season as; Leporello (cover) in Don Giovanni, Mendel in Fiddler on the Roof, Jack Hubbard in Doctor Atomic, and playing Dancaïre and covering Escamillo in Carmen.
Kuo has maintained a longstanding artistic relationship with companies across the San Francisco Bay Area, culminating in a busy 2025–2026 season. In 2026, he performed Rambaldo in La Rondine with Pocket Opera, and at Opera San José, he portrayed Germont (Cover) in La Traviata, Marchese D’Obigny in La Traviata, and Silvio/Alfio (Cover) in Cavalleria & Pagliacci. His engagements in 2025 included Sharpless (Cover) in Madama Butterfly with Opera San José, Urbain/Gontran in La Vie Parisienne with Pocket Opera, and Jose Maria Gomez in Zorro with Opera San José.
The 2024 season saw him take on multiple assignments with Opera San José, including Colline (Cover) in La Bohème, Schaunard (Cover) in La Bohème, Sergeant in La Bohème, and 2nd Priest in
Die Zauberflöte, alongside appearances as the Bass Soloist in the world premiere of Bulrusherwith West Edge Opera, Schaunard in La Bohème with Pocket Opera, Ophémon in L’amant Anonyme with SJSU Opera Theatre, and Marullo in Rigoletto with Opera San José. In 2023, his performances featured Officer in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Opera San José, Fiorello (Cover) in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Opera San José, Gregorio (Cover) in Roméo et Juliette with Opera San José, Paris (Cover) in Roméo et Juliette with Opera San José, Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore with SF Opera Guild, Japanese Envoy in Le Rossignol with West Edge Opera, Sciarrone in Tosca with Pocket Opera, and Pistola (Cover) in Falstaff with Opera San José, following his turn in 2022 as the Pirate King in Pirates of Penzance with Lyric Theatre of SJ.
On the concert stage, Kuo is an equally sought-after soloist for canonical choral-orchestral masterworks and contemporary cross-genre literature. His concert and musical theatre chronology includes performing as the Bass Soloist in Schubert’s Mass in A-flat, D. 678, in 2026, and serving as the Bass Soloist in Mozart’s Mass in C with the Stanford Chorale in 2024. In 2023, he appeared as the Bass Soloist in Bach’s Magnificat with Peninsula Cantare and as the Bass Soloist in New Creation with the Concord Chorus. Showing his theatrical versatility in 2022, he performed both Wolf in Into the Woods and Cinderella’s Prince in Into the Woods with Lyric Theatre of SJ.
Kuo holds a Master of Music in Vocal Performance (2018) from San Jose State University and a Bachelor of Science in Music (2015) from Pacific Union College. He has refined his artistry through competitive training programs, including the Lyric Opera Studio of Weimar (2018) and the Opera San José Summer Program (2017). An exceptionally well-rounded theatrical performer, Kuo brings 21 years of piano experience, thorough preparation in stage combat, and three years of specialized experience in historical period dances ranging from the Regency era through the 1940s to his stage craft. He is completely fluent in both Mandarin and English, bridging his cultural roots between Taichung, Taiwan, and San Jose, California. Dedicated to nurturing the local arts community, he also brings 11 years of experience in vocal teaching and educational community outreach.
