Set Designer

Steven C. Kemp returns during the 2017-18 season, designing sets for Mozart’s Così fan tutte, the North American premiere of Alma Deutscher’s Cinderella and Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman. Mr. Kemp has designed at Opera San José for eight seasons starting with the West Coast premiere of Carlson’s Anna Karenina and including The Flying Dutchman, Cosi Fan Tutte, Silent Night, Lucia di Lammermoor, The Marriage of Figaro, Tosca, The Italian Girl in Algiers, Rigoletto, Il trovatore, Faust, Idomeneo, and Falstaff which was a finalist in the World Stage Design 2017 Exhibition in Taiwan.

Other opera designs include: Tiefland (Sarasota Opera), Orpheus in the Underworld, Don Giovanni (New Orleans Opera), Figaro 90210 (The Duke on 42nd, NYC), Madama Butterfly, Dead Man Walking, West Side Story, The Music Man, Oklahoma! (Indiana University), Le Portrait de Manon, Suor Angelica, Don Giovanni, The Elixir of Love (San Francisco Conservatory of Music), A Streetcar Named Desire directed by Brad Dalton (Hawaii Opera Theatre, Opera Grand Rapids/New Orleans Opera/ Fresno Opera/Townsend Opera), A Streetcar Named Desire directed by Jose Maria Condemi (Merola/Opera Santa Barbara/Kentucky Opera/Tulsa Opera).

His work in New York includes numerous productions Off-Broadway for Keen Company, Mint Theatre Company, Second Stage Theatre, York Theatre Company, The Playwrights Realm, Cherry Lane Theatre, 59E59 as well as regional and international productions at Pasadena Playhouse, Asolo Repertory Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, Bucks County Playhouse, and Norwegian Cruise Line. Mr. Kemp received his MFA from UC San Diego.
