Assistant Conductor; Chorus Master

whitfieldnewDuring the 2017-18 season, OSJ’s resident conductor and chorus master Andrew Whitfield serves as assistant conductor and chorus master for Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Puccini’s La rondine, Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman and Verdi’s La traviata. Last season, Mr. Whitfield conducted Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, was assistant conductor of Puccini’s La bohème and chorus master for all four 2016-17 season productions. Other OSJ production credits include Puccini’s Tosca, Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and Bizet’s Carmen, Verdi’s Rigoletto, Rossini’s The Italian Girl in Algiers, and Mozart’s The Magic Flute. In 2013-14, he made his debut as principal conductor for OSJ’s production of Verdi’s Falstaff, and shared conducting duties for Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel.

In 2012, he joined the music staff of the San Francisco Opera for a production of Lohengrin and returned in in 2016 for the world premiere of Bright Sheng’s Dream of the Red Chamber conducted by George Manahan. This year he joined the music staff of the San Francisco Symphony as assistant/cover conductor for concerts featuring conductor Krzysztof Urbanski and concerts in Spring 2018. For Minnesota Opera, he will serve as chorus master for their production of Massenet’s Thais.

He moved to the Bay Area six years ago from New York City, where he served as music director for the famed Amato Opera, conducting nearly two hundred performances of two dozen operas. He joined the OSJ’s music staff as chorus master in January of 2011. In his inaugural season with the company, he collaborated with world-renowned chorus director Ian Robertson on Mozart’s Idomeneo, a co-production with the Packard Humanities Institute that garnered wide critical acclaim. He made his conducting debut at Opera San José in a double bill of Poulenc’s La voix humaine and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci later that year, and returned to the podium for Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers and Verdi’s Il trovatore
