Tara Branham, director

Hi y’all!

When I began directing I was 17, from a working class family of decidedly non-artists, attending high school in Floyds Knobs, Indiana. Though my family would have preferred a more traditional life trajectory, I went on to become the first woman in my family to graduate from college, intern at Steppenwolf Theatre, direct 14 world premieres of plays in 14 years, and eventually see an opera…

It was Ernest Bloch’s Macbeth at Chicago Opera Theatre. It was deliciously weird, and I was enthralled. I sleuthed out the director, Andreas Mitisek, convinced him that my 10 years playing the violin would help me read a score, and began my tutelage as an opera stage director. Since then I’ve had the pleasure of assistant directing operas across the country. My thirst for new work continues to guide me. I’ve assisted on two world premieres: Freedom Ride by Dan Shore and Fire Shut Up in My Bones by Terrence Blanchard, slated to become the first opera written by a Black composer produced at the Met.

When I’m not directing, I find that my ferocious love of people continues to be my driving force. I’m politically active in the movements for Black lives and body positivity, host a bi-monthly book club for white women on dismantling systemic oppression, serve on the equity and diversity committee for Balancing the Stage, love hosting dinner parties, and unapologetically take selfies.

I am forever grateful to have this opportunity to serve the Opera San José community, and I can’t wait to share all that we have planned.
