We are excited to welcome Efraín Solís to Opera San José, as he makes his company debut this season in the title role of The Marriage of Figaro. Raised in Santa Ana, CA, he’s no stranger to the Bay Area as a former San Francisco Opera Adler Fellow.
Efraín was in choirs all his life, and his father is a church musician, so he was lucky enough to always have music around when he was growing up. When he went to his first opera, he was instantly hooked and was able to start taking voice lessons with his choir director where he discovered his ability to sing opera himself. Though starting out as a classical singer can be daunting, he had some encouraging words from his teacher to keep him going: “I remember my teacher telling me that he knew I belonged on stage the first time I sang for him. It’s moments like that, when someone you really look up to gives you a nudge and tells you that you have something to say, that are very important to a young singer’s life.”
In addition to his work at San Francisco Opera, Efraín has performed with Houston Grand Opera, El Paso Opera, Virginia Opera, and Utah Opera among many more. Along the way, he’s picked up some tips and tricks. In order to stay healthy, he’s a big fan of garlic, daily vitamins and exercise. And as a conscientious colleague, in performance you’ll likely find him backstage with several packs of mints because one of biggest fears is doing a scene with bad breath.
We look forward to welcoming Efrain to Opera San José, and enjoying his interpretation of one of Mozart’s most loved characters!
