Opera San José Costume Rentals Policy

Opera San Jose offers a wide variety of costumes for rent to opera companies, professional theaters and universities. We apologize, but we do not rent costumes for Halloween or to individuals for parties or social events. Our costume rental program is to provide support for professional arts organizations.

Costume rentals and returns are by appointment only. We cannot accept walk-ins. We appreciate at least 48 hours in advance when requesting appointments. Please contact Alyssa Oania, our Costume Rentals Manager at 408.437.4468 or Oania@operasj.org  to schedule an appointment.

Our costumes rent on a piece by piece basis and our rental fees apply to a five-week period. Unused items returned within that five-week period will not be charged a rental fee (referred to as the trial period).  Rentals will incur a charge of 15% of the rental fee per week after five weeks.

Costumes may be altered to fit, but must be returned to their original condition prior to cleaning and return. Costumes that are not restored to their original condition will be charged an alteration damage assessment to cover the labor costs to return the costume to its original condition. Fabric may not be cut, dyed, painted, or otherwise permanently altered. Tape, glue, iron-on bonding, or any other kind of adhesives may not be used on costumes. Opera San Jose labels must remain in the garments. Please remove your labels prior to return.

We do not rent shoes and boots.  All rentals must be properly cleaned prior to return. If the renter is unsure of how to clean a certain piece correctly, it is the renter’s responsibility to contact the Costume Rentals Manager for instruction. Damaged items will be charged a replacement fee.

A valid credit card is required as a security deposit on all rentals. Rental policies and prices are subject to change without notice. Each rental requires a Costume Rental Contract to be signed.

Rental payment is due at the time of the final return. For large rentals, the renter will be charged a $25 re-stocking fee.

The rental fees and replacement values are determined by several factors:  the quality of the garment and the materials, the age and condition of the costume, the labor and type of construction involved, and the ease of replacement (this applies specifically to rare textiles, items which require an artisan, such as masks or headdresses, and sets or parts of sets).
