Bring your popcorn to this year's Operafest as we take you on a ride through many hit movies that have incorporated famous opera themes in their score. Hear some of opera’s greatest hits from blockbuster movies such as Pretty Woman, Philadelphia, The Shawshank Redemption, and Moonstruck. Beautiful music from the great operas is often heard and enjoyed outside of the opera house. Who wouldn’t recognize the "Habenera" from Carmen or the famous tenor aria, "Nessun Dorma" from Turandot? Opera and cinema are a powerful pair.

Operafest will take place at Napredak Hall, at 770 Montague Expressway in San Jose, on May 18 and 19. Cocktails, start at 6 p.m.; dinner follows an hour later. Cost is $100 per person (a portion of which is tax deductible).

Highlighting each evening will be the special performances provided by Opera San José’s talented singers as well as an exciting array of over 100 live and silent auction items that include travel getaways, spa gift certificates, arts performance/dining packages,  gift baskets, fine wines, and much more. This year's grand raffle prize is use of a high-end condo in Palm Desert (near Palm Springs), and includes a gift certificate to a nearby luxury day spa.

Proceeds from this annual fundraiser benefit Opera San José’s K–12 educational curriculum that includes in-school workshops with a dress rehearsal matinee program.

Sponsorship opportunities, starting at $500, are available and will allow participants to promote their business at Operafest while supporting this good cause. In-kind donations are especially welcome to support the auctions.

While prize-drawing tickets will be available at Operafest, they also can be purchased in advance at performances of Madama Butterfly, April 21–May 6, in the California Theatre prior to curtain and during intermission.

Opera San José Trustee and Event Chair Steve Baker welcomes your help by gathering auction items, soliciting sponsorships, or advertising in the event program. He can be reached via e-mail at baker131@aol.com if you are interested in assisting.

For Operafest ticket information, call the Opera San José Box Office at 408-437-4450. Further questions may be directed to staff member Jeri Waxman at 408-437-4463 or via e-mail at waxman@operasj.org.
