Tosca: Politics, Passion, and Murder
Tosca has all the elements that made Puccini the most admired Italian opera composer after Verdi.  It is more richly melodic than La bohème, and it is more tensely dramatic than Madama Butterfly. The second act of Tosca is perhaps the most powerful operatic scene that has ever been composed, a testament to the power of Puccini's music which evokes a degree of menace that is unparalleled.. Attending a Pre-Performance Talk?
If you are planning to attend one of the two pre-performance talks before each opera other than opening night you must use the California Theatre's Market Street entrance. It is the only entrance open early enough for you to attend the lectures.

As always, the First Street entrance will open at 7 p.m., and the box office will be open at 6:30 p.m. for evening performances (the theatre opens at 2 p.m. on matinee days, while the box office opens at 1:30 p.m.). Opera San José does not have access to the First Street entrance until the theatre staff are present at 7 p.m. The talks are at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. before matinees and 5:30 and 6: 30 before all other performances.

Fresh Pond Music Tour: Seven Starry Nights in NYC
Join Opera San José's Larry Hancock February 27 - March 6, 2005 and go on Fresh Pond's annual pilgrimage to The Met, the premier opera company of the United States.  In addition to attending Samson et Dalila featuring soprano Denyce Graves, the tour this year will include two other Met productions, one evening of theater and one evening at the symphony.  Lodging will be at the boutique Excelsior Hotel with breakfast included daily, five dinners and two lunches. OSJ Welcomes Cantabile Youth Singers

Opera San José is delighted to introduce artists from the elite Cantabile Youth Singers in its performance of Tosca.  Performing in the children's chorus, the following young singers were specially selected from Cantabile's Concert and Chamber choirs by Cantabile Artistic Director Elena Sharkova and OSJ's chorus master Bruce Olstad: Tanya Bendis, Elias Berezin, Laurel Howard, Alyssa Jepsky, Stephanie Kaul, Lindsay Rose Miller, Catherine Partain, Karen Reyes, Leila Smith, Kate Tesarowski, Laura Tesarowski and Laura Michelle Wise.

By the time Tosca opens, these hard-working, talented youth will have spent 50 hours in rehearsal while attending school, completing homework and attending countless after-school activities. According to Cantabile Business Manager JoAnn di Lorenzo, "When the families knew that their children's work with Opera San José involved learning an operatic score and how to move on stage, as well as experience staging rehearsals and an opportunity to work at the new opera house, the response was immediate and enthusiastic." For a listing of upcoming concerts presented by the Cantabile Youth Singers, please visit their website.
