Douglas Nagel,
Baritone
(1988 - 1992)

After serving as Associate Director of Rimrock Opera for eight seasons, Mr. Nagel will assume the role of General Director of that company during the 2007 - 2008 season. During his tenure with Rimrock Opera, Mr. Nagel produced and directed such operas as Carmen, Madama Butterfly, Die lustige witwe, Tosca and Die Zauberflöte. During the 2005 - 2006 season, Mr. Nagel directed Rimrock Opera's productions of La traviata and Die Fledermaus. Mr. Nagel will continue to serve as Director for Rimrock Opera while overseeing OSJ's educational outreach programs. Other recent directorial engagements include The Merry Widow at Northern Plains Opera, Pirates of Penzance at Longview Opera in Texas, and Die Fledermaus with the Sacramento Opera.

Previously, Mr. Nagel sang the role of Thomas Putnam (The Crucible) for Opera San Josè in 2005. Vocal engagements during the 2004 season included a performance at the inaugural galas for the opening of the California Theatre, and appearances as Scarpia (Tosca) and as Count Orlock (Dracula) in Alva Henderson' world premiere of Nosferatu for both Opera Idaho and Rimrock Opera.

During the 2001 - 2002 season, he appeared in the role of Monterrone in Opera San José’s production of Rigoletto, Don Bartolo with Intermountain Opera, and as a soloist in Verdi’s Requiem with San Francisco Choral Society. Mr. Nagel also directed a production of Madame Butterfly for Sacramento Opera, and appeared as Don Magnifico with the Eugene Opera and Bartolo with the Nevada Opera. Engagements for 1999 - 2000 featured Mr. Nagel as Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro) at Western Slope Music Festival (June 1999), Bartolo (Il barbiere di Siviglia) with three companies: Bear Valley Music Festival, Opera San José and Rimrock Opera in Billings, Montana, and Don Magnifico (La Cenerentola) at Santa Barbara Grand Opera (spring 2000).

In 1997, he made his Greater Buffalo Opera debut in the title role of Der fliegender Holländer, performed the title role in Gianni Schicchi with Oakland Lyric Opera, Frank in Die Fledermaus for Bear Valley Music Festival, appeared in Powder Her Face with Berkeley Symphony, directed Die Fledermaus for Rogue Valley Opera and appeared as soloist in a performance of Mahler’s Das klagende Lied with Berkeley Symphony in 1998.

Following his departure from Opera San José in 1992, Mr. Nagel appeared as Scarpia in Puccini's Tosca with Virginia Opera (1993) and Opera Company of El Paso (1994), and he made his European debut in Rostock, Germany, as Jokanaan in Richard Strauss' Salome (1993) which he repeated for that same company the following season. He returned to Virginia Opera in the 1994 - 1995 season in the title role of Don Giovanni, as Germont (La traviata), Jokanaan (Salome), and Francisco de Santander in the world premiere of Thea Musgrave's Simón Bolívar, which he also performed the next fall in London's Royal Albert Hall in a concert presentation sponsored by the BBC.

Other roles performed include the title role in a concert version of Wagner's Der fliegender Holländer for  San Francisco Wagner Society (1992), Wotan (Das Rheingold) with Wagner Society of Northern California (1994), Creon (Oedipus Rex) with Berkeley Symphony, and further performances as Jokanaan  with Opera Company of Philadelphia (1995) and Opera Columbus (1996). In 1996, he appeared in the title role of Busoni's Doktor Faustus with Berkeley Symphony under conductor Kent Nagano, performed Schaunard (La bohème) with Opera Idaho, sang the title role in Don Giovanni with Apollo Opera, and appeared as Michele in Puccini’s Il tabarro with Oakland Lyric Opera.
