David Kurtenbach returns during the 2010 - 2011 season in his
second year as Chorus Master for the company. He has worked as a soloist and
conductor with many Bay Area ensembles including the Oakland
Symphony Chorus, Pacific Mozart Ensemble, Festival Opera, Schola
Cantorum, and San Francisco Choral Artists – including an
acclaimed performance as part of the Street Chorus for Bernstein's
Mass with the
Oakland East Bay Symphony. For four seasons he was the Chorus
Master of Festival Opera, also debuting as Assistant Conductor for
their production of Carlisle Floyd's
Susannah. Most
recently, he performed world premieres of works by Meredith Monk,
David Lang, and Dave Brubeck.
Mr. Kurtenbach is an
active member of Volti – a professional choir based in San
Francisco committed to performing and supporting young, upcoming
composers, and premiering new music from the 21st Century. He
currently sings as a Choral Scholar in the Quartet in Residence at
the French National Church in San Francisco, Notre Dame des
Victoires, performing Gregorian chant and 15th to 18th Century
polyphony.
After obtaining vocal
performance and conducting degrees from Oberlin, he began work as
a singer with a specialty in early music. He has appeared with
Apollo's Fire, Cleveland's Baroque Orchestra, in works ranging
from Bach's Passions to 15th Century Hebrew polyphony to
Mozart's Requiem.
