Adult Education

Tuesday Previews
On the Tuesday evenings prior to each opening night, a preview lecture presented by Larry Hancock, with arias and ensembles performed by members of the cast, will be presented at a downtown restaurant.  Hors d'oeuvres and wine will be served at 6:30 p.m. and the preview will begin at 7:00 p.m., lasting one hour.  These entertaining talks are intended to give the newcomer an understanding of the plot and characters, as well as a taste of the music itself.  Preview dates:  Eugene Onegin, 8/26; The Elixir of Love, 10/28; Così fan tutte,
1/27; Carmen, 4/7. Tickets ($25 each) may be purchased by calling the Opera San José box office at (408) 437-4450 or by ordering on-line via tickets.com.

Introduction to Opera
At 6:30 before evening performances (except opening night), and at 1:30 before matinees, a free talk will be presented in the California Theatre that will acquaint you with the composer’s life, his place in the history of opera, the story and its characters.

If you are attending the 1:30 or 6:30 Introduction, you must be ticketed for that day's performance; and your ticket must be torn as you enter the building.

There will be no Introduction to Opera talks on opening night .

Opera History Course
Each year, as a part of Opera San José's commitment to adult education, we offer a six-evening course that covers opera through all its periods.  It's an inexpensive, enjoyable way to learn more about this dynamic art form in the company of other interested adults.  This popular opera history series covers 400 years of opera development, from Jacopo Perri's Euridice in 1600 to the present day. Larry Hancock, course instructor, will present this overview of opera history in May and June, 2008,  at Opera San José headquarters, 2149 Paragon Drive.  Click here for more information.

Community-Wide Performances

With programs ranging from one soloist to complete operas, Opera San José’s Community-Wide Performances program continues to be an important part of our contribution to the cultural life of San José and its surrounding cities and towns. These performances range from outdoor festivals to small gatherings in private homes. Many service clubs utilize Opera San José’s services for monthly meetings, fundraisers and other special occasions. Click here for more information.

Many of our educational and community wide performances are made possible by the generous support of our corporate sponsors.
