Knight Ridder, a major co-sponsor of OSJ's 2004 - 2005 production of Carmen and the sole sponsor of the  2005 - 2006 production of The Crucible, has actively supported the arts and education in the communities it serves.  They have been the sole sponsor of past Opera San José mainstage productions in addition to funding Opera San José's K-12 educational programs.

A communications company engaged primarily in newspaper and Internet publishing, Knight Ridder is the nation's second-largest newspaper publisher.  The newspaper division publishes 31 daily newspapers (including the San Jose Mercury News) in 28 different U. S. markets, with a readership of 8.7 million daily and 12.6 million Sunday.  It has investments in a variety of Internet and technology companies.  The Internet operation, Knight Ridder Digital, creates and maintains the company's online properties.  It is the founder and operator of Real Cities, the largest nationwide advertising network of local news web sites with web sites in more than 100 markets and covering more than 16 percent of online users in the United States.  Knight Ridder Digital creates and maintains a variety of online services in classifieds, entertainment, shopping, news, city guides, search and archives. 

Knight Ridder and Knight Ridder Digital are both located in San Jose.  Each of Knight Ridder's newspapers and subsidiary companies is operated on a substantially autonomous basis by local management appointed by the corporate officers.  Basic business policies, editorial services and quality control are provided by corporate.
