Opera San José is pleased to announce the presentation of a new Educational Curriculum program during the 2006 - 2007 season:

Beginning in the fall of 2006, OSJ will present the one-act opera, The Night Harry Stopped Smoking, composed by John Davies and Ross Dabrusin. Made possible by grants from Kaiser Permanente's Community Benefit Grant Program and Good Samaritan Hospital's Community Giving Program, this 45-minute musical theatre piece uses a combination of contemporary music and dance forms, and has proven to be a successful vehicle for teaching students about not only the dangers of smoking, but also, how quickly one becomes addicted to this deadly habit. Each performance will be followed by a question and answer session, during which students will be invited to direct questions to former smokers from a COPD/Emphysema Support Group. Please contact OSJ's Director of Education Douglas Nagel  at (408) 437-2229 or (406) 698-6334 for booking information. Click here to view a study guide.*

In addition to The Night Harry Stopped Smoking,  Opera San José offers a variety of opera experiences designed for students from kindergarten through college. In addition to our 30-minute What is Opera? assembly, we offer A 15-session Let’s Make an Opera! mentor project (in which a single class creates and produces their own original opera) is available after students have experienced the first two elements in the curriculum. Also available are Classroom Presentations in which a Staff Member meets with one class to discuss aspects of the performing arts. After completing the aforementioned programs, students will better appreciate the Mainstage Student Matinees, the final part of our K-12 educational curriculum. Click here to read comments from educators, parents and students about our K-12 Educational Programming.

What is Opera?
(Two 30-minute presentations; each accommodates up to 300 students)
This is a lecture/demonstration that includes operatic excerpts with piano accompaniment, exploring a range of languages, musical styles and historic periods. Question and answer interaction with the audience is integral to the presentation.

Let's Make an Opera!
(15 class periods)
Here is a unique class project. Designed as an extension of Opera San José’s assemblies, this program’s goal is for a single class, or a group of about 30 students, to create, produce and perform their own original opera.

An Opera San José Principal Artist, in collaboration with a member of OSJ’s musical staff, meets with the students and their teacher two or three times weekly for approximately six weeks to create, produce and finally present the world premiere of the opera for the school community. Contact  Director of Education Douglas Nagel at (408) 437-2229 or (406) 698-6334 for more information.

Classroom Presentations:
A Staff Member meets with one class to discuss aspects of the performing arts.  These sessions are easily made more advanced for drama or music classes at the high school and university levels.  There is no charge for this presentation.

Mainstage Student Matinees:
Student matinees are the culmination of our four-part educational curriculum. Once students have experienced What is Opera?, the One-Act Opera and Let's make an Opera!, they are well prepared to experience a mainstage performance.
Although students' participation in What is Opera?, One-Act Opera and the Let's Make an Opera! programs is recommended prior to attending a mainstage matinee, all students are welcome to attend a matinee performance. As operatic subject matter is not suitable to all age groups, attendance to certain operas may be restricted to specific ages.

This season, two of OSJ's Mainstage Student Matinees are administered by the City of San José Office of Cultural Affairs through the Arts Express program: The Barber of Seville and Madama Butterfly.

Arts Express will begin accepting registration for The Barber of Seville and Madama Butterfly in September after brochures are mailed out to all Santa Clara County schools just after the Labor Day weekend. Contact the City of San José ARTS EXPRESS program at (408) 277-2859 if you have questions about having your students attend these free performances.

Click here for a link to a registration form you can fill out and fax/mail to Arts Express. Registration is first come, first served, with priority registration going to San Jose schools if completed registration form is received by September 29, 2006.
