Giulio Cesare Perrone,

Set Designer

 

 

 


Set designer Giulio Cesare Perrone returns to Opera San Jose to design sets for Don Giovanni after receiving critical praise for his set design during the 2004 - 2005 inaugural season in the California Theatre.   Mr. Perrone's previous design work for Opera San Josè include sets for Le nozze di Figaro, Tosca, Carmen, Der fliegende Holländer, Il trovatore, Manon, Carmen, Il turco in Italia and Die lustige witwe. During the 2003 - 2004 season, Mr. Perrone performed double duty as both set designer and stage director for the double bill Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci.

Other companies Mr. Perrone has designed for include San José Repertory Theatre, San Diego Repertory Theatre, The Della Arte Company, Festival Opera, ACT Academy, Marin Theatre Company Foghouse Productions, California Shakespeare Festival, TheatreWorks, Magic Theatre, and A Travelling Jewish Theatre.

Mr. Perrone has designed 28 productions for Italy's most important festivals as well as resident and touring companies.  Before moving to the United States in 1995, he also directed productions of Mourning Becomes Electra, Pentesilea, and Andrea's Mother.  His American design debut was the Laguna Playhouse production of Goldonia's The Liar, for which he won a Dramalogue award. Other awards received include the 2000 Pew National Artists Residency grant with Della Arte International for his adaptation of Milton's Paradise Lost, for which he wrote, designed and directed. Paradise Lost: Clone of God went on tour in May of 2002 to Croatia and Hungary.  He has since received a 2002 Pew-Theatre Communications Group grant for his adaptation of The Memoirs of Jacques Casanova.
