A Masked Ball is made up of cascading love duets, smoldering jealousy as only Verdi could voice it, misplaced vengeance, and a wrongful death at a dizzying costume ball. Ballo is Verdi's twenty-second opera, falling between La traviata and Aïda.  It is filled with the emotional truth and ardent passion that made Verdi famous and keeps him in the forefront of all opera composers.  Ballo is a study in melody and charm balanced against a burning resentment that erupts in murder and regret.  This is Italian opera at its expressive, passionate height.
