DAVID COX returns to OSJ to direct La bohème during the 2005 - 2006 season. Previously, Mr. Cox directed Carmen for the 2004 - 2005 debut season in the California Theatre, and Faust during the 2002 - 2003 season. Recent OSJ singing engagements include the roles of Don Magnifico (La Cenerentola) and the title role in Don Pasquale. Mr. Cox also appeared in the SJSU Artist Showcase Concert in honor of retiring professor Dr. Charlene Archibeque in spring 2004. During the summer of 2006, Mr. Cox performed the roles of Voltaire and Pangloss for Festival Opera's production of Candide.

Most recently, Mr. Cox's production of Un ballo in mashera for Festival Opera received a standing ovation at its opening night performance in July 2006. Other recent directing engagements include Tosca for Pacific Repertory Opera, Gianni Schicchi and the Impresario for the University of Southern California, and an engagement with Festival Opera where he directed Rigoletto.

During the 2000 - 2001 season, Mr. Cox made his directorial debut with Opera San José, directing a production of  Eugene Oñegin, and then returned the following season to sing the title role in OSJ's production of Falstaff.  Other recent productions Mr. Cox has directed include Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Don Pasquale, Die Zauberflöte, Faust and Rigoletto for Pacific Repertory Opera.  He also helped initiate and direct the first opera performance of the yearly Mozart Festival of  San Luis Obispo where he subsequently directed productions of Die Zauberflöte and Così fan tutte.

In 1998, Mr. Cox directed Madama Butterfly with Pacific Repertory Opera in San Luis Obispo in March, performed Falstaff with Whitewater Opera in Indiana, Rigoletto with Music at Bear Valley, and Bartolo (Il barbiere di Siviglia) for Whitewater Opera. In 1999, he performed First Soldier (Salome) for Austin Lyric Opera, the title role in Rigoletto for Sorg and Whitewater Opera Companies, and Bartolo (Il barbiere di Siviglia) for Eugene Opera. Other engagements during the 1999 - 2000 season included Rafael and Adam in Haydn’s Creation for the MozartKammerorchester, Alfio (Cavalleria rusticana) and The Emperor of China in Stravinsky’s Le Rossingnol for Osaka, Germont (La traviata) and Dulcamara (L’elisir d’amore) for Sorg and Whitewater Opera Companies. Mr. Cox also recorded Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle for Polygram of Belgium and Japan in December of 1999.

Following his departure from OSJ in 1994, Mr. Cox launched his international career with appearances in the title role of Rigoletto in Osaka, Japan, and in a European touring presentation of Orff's Carmina Burana that included performances in Vienna, Kraków and Budapest as well as other venues in the Czech and Slovak Republics. He directed Così fan tutte for San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival and productions of Die Zauberflöte and Tosca for Pacific Repertory Opera, sang Marcello (La bohème) with the Bear Valley Music Festival, and returned to the Sakai-City Opera in Japan to perform in their 10th Anniversary Gala Concert as the only non-Japanese performer.

Mr. Cox has been a Winner in the San José District Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and was a Finalist in the Pacific Region of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
