David Cox returns to Opera San José to direct La bohème after receiving kudos for the 2004 - 2005 production of Carmen. Other recent productions Mr. Cox has directed for OSJ include Les Pêcheurs de perles, Faust and Eugene Onegin, as well as Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Don Pasquale, Rigoletto and Die Zauberflöte for Pacific Repertory Opera. He also helped initiate and direct the first opera performance of the yearly Mozart Festival of  San Luis Obispo where he subsequently directed productions of Die Zauberflöte and Così fan tutte.

Most recently, Mr. Cox's production of Un ballo in mashera for Festival Opera received a standing ovation at its opening night performance in July 2006. Other recent directorial engagements include Così fan tutte for University of Southern California and Festival Opera's summer production of Rigoletto in 2004, and Tosca for Pacific Repertory Opera in San Luis Obispo in 2005.

In addition to his successful directing career, Mr. Cox has received high praise for his performance of many of the leading baritone roles with opera companies in the western United States and the Far East.  He has appeared with Nevada Opera, Eugene Opera, Austin Lyric Opera, Tulsa Opera, and Music From Bear Valley, as well as many other regional opera companies and music festivals. Abroad, he has performed the title role in Rigoletto, Alfio in Cavalleria rusticana and the Emperor of China in Stravinsky's Le Rossingol for Sakai-City Opera in Japan.  European performances included a concert debut as soloist in Carmina Burana with Lvov Philharmonic in Krakow and with Northern Bohemian Symphony Orchestra in the Czech Republic of Teplice. In spring 2004 he appeared in the SJSU Artist Showcase Concert in honor of retiring professor Dr. Charlene Archibeque.  During the summer of 2006, Mr. Cox performed the roles of Voltaire and Pangloss for Festival Opera's production of Candide.

Mr. Cox has been a Winner in the San José District Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and was a Finalist in the Pacific Region of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
