Richard Battle
Costume Designer
Richard Battle
designs costumes for Opera San Jose's production of A Masked Ball
during the 2005 - 2006 season. Mr. Battle's recent design credits include
West Bay Opera's productions of The Threepenny Opera, Don Giovanni, Viva
la mamma, La Périchole, Tartuffe (set and costume design), Cosě fan
tutte, The Consul, Tosca, Rigoletto, Lucia di Lammermoor, La traviata
and Die Fledermaus. Other companies Mr. Battle has designed costumes
as well as scenery for include San Francisco Ballet (where he is head of the
makeup department), Merola Opera, Oakland Ballet, Woodminster Musical
Theater, Oakland Ensemble, the American Conservatory Theater and Lorraine
Hansberry Theater of San Francisco.
Highly regarded
as a makeup artist, Mr. Battle has been on the faculty of Mills College
Drama Department since 1972 where he specializes in costumes and makeup. He
has taught master classes for the Kryolan Corporation of San Francisco, San
Francisco Ballet, Merola Opera Oakland Ballet and the Stanford Drama
Department.
Awards and
accolades received include Emmy nominations for his makeup design in San
Francisco Ballet's televised productions of Songs for Dead Warriors,
Cinderella, and The Tempest, scenic design in The
Lamplighters' production of H.M.S. Pinafore, and the Bay Area
Critics Award for Sophisticated Ladies, Pirates of Penzance, Pecong,
and Savoyards. Mr. Battle is the makeup artist for leading vocal
artists Kathleen Battle, James Morris and Dolora Zajick.
